Students learn to identify and understand how authors intentionally use literary devices to communicate ideas, develop characters, create mood, and strengthen the author's purpose and message. In Grade 4, students focus primarily on first-person and third-person point of view while continuing to recognize other literary devices such as imagery, figurative language, and sound devices. Strong readers understand that an author's choice of point of view changes how the story is experienced and understood.
